THE TEXAS PURPLE HULL PEA FESTIVAL

The third annual Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival will be Saturday, June 25, in Shankleville, 15 miles north of the county seat of Newton (150 miles northeast of Houston). Festival speakers include food editor/writer Patricia Sharpe with Texas Monthly and historian Michelle Mears. Andrea Roberts, PhD candidate at the University of Texas at Austin and founder of the Texas Freedom Colonies Project, an organization that connects and supports freedom colony descendants who continue to live within rural and urban settlements. Roberts will review her research on Newton, Jasper and Tyler counties. Among the many activities at the all-day event, the festival will include cooking demonstrations, live music, storytelling by Dru Woods, guided walking tours including preservation efforts of the Odom Homestead and archeological review by Dr. George Avery of Stephen F.
